Compensation

$22.97–$27.00 per hour

Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and assigned clinic.

Clinic assignments are based on organizational needs, experience, and qualifications.


Position Summary

As a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), you will provide direct clinical and administrative support to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nursing staff while helping deliver safe, efficient, patient-centered care.

This position combines patient intake, clinical procedures, electronic medical record documentation, care coordination, and administrative support within a fast-paced military outpatient healthcare environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms before each patient appointment by ensuring rooms are clean, organized, fully stocked, and equipped with the necessary medical supplies and instruments.
  • Welcome and room patients while assisting with patient check-in, admissions, transfers, and discharges as directed.
  • Obtain and accurately document patient vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, height, and weight.
  • Collect and document patient medical history, medication history, allergies, chief complaints, and other pertinent clinical information.
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during both invasive and non-invasive examinations and procedures.
  • Perform ordered diagnostic procedures within scope of practice.
  • Prepare laboratory and imaging requisitions in accordance with clinic policies and provider orders.
  • Maintain examination room inventory by monitoring supply levels, restocking materials, and ensuring medical equipment is clean and operational.
  • Enter patient demographic information, diagnoses, visit documentation, and discharge information into the electronic health record.
  • Coordinate patient flow to ensure timely and efficient delivery of care.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality while following HIPAA, infection prevention, and military healthcare policies.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

Additional Responsibilities – Internal Medicine & Pediatrics

Medical Assistants assigned to Internal Medicine or Pediatrics clinics may also perform the following duties:

  • Operate a variety of medical equipment, including:
  • Automatic and manual blood pressure monitors
  • Electronic thermometers
  • Pulse oximeters
  • 12-Lead EKG machines
  • Handheld nebulizers
  • Tympanometers
  • IV infusion pumps (setup only)
  • Utilize MHS GENESIS, CarePoint, and other electronic medical record systems to:
  • Complete patient intake documentation
  • Register and check in patients
  • Schedule appointments
  • Process referrals
  • Manage medication refill requests
  • Document patient encounters
  • Communicate with members of the healthcare team
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations, treatments, and ambulatory procedures.
  • Administer oral medications, immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections after completing required competency validation.
  • Accurately document medications administered and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
  • Perform venipuncture for laboratory testing and establish IV access after required training and competency validation.
  • Assist with IV therapy setup, monitoring, and discontinuation as directed.
  • Monitor patients during procedures, recognizing changes in patient condition and promptly notifying providers of any clinical concerns.
  • Reinforce patient education regarding medications, treatment plans, preventive care, and follow-up instructions.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, pharmacy, and ancillary departments to ensure coordinated patient care.


Additional Responsibilities – Orthopedic & Maxillofacial Surgery

Medical Assistants assigned to Orthopedic and Maxillofacial Surgery services serve as an integral member of the surgical care team supporting providers across outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and procedural settings.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery providers throughout daily clinical operations.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, surgical consultations, treatments, procedures, and follow-up visits.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, chief complaints, medical histories, and other relevant clinical information.
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms by ensuring instruments, equipment, and supplies are available prior to patient arrival.
  • Assist providers during specialty examinations and minor surgical procedures.
  • Perform clinical duties within scope of practice, including:
  • Wound care assistance
  • Dressing changes
  • Suture removal (when authorized)
  • Specimen collection and handling
  • Patient preparation for procedures
  • Coordinate referrals, specialty consultations, imaging studies, laboratory testing, and follow-up appointments.
  • Assist providers with electronic documentation, scanning records, updating patient charts, and completing required clinical forms.
  • Facilitate communication between providers, nurses, residents, ancillary departments, and patients.
  • Assist with patient education regarding surgical preparation, wound care, medications, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
  • Maintain clinic organization, supply inventory, equipment readiness, and efficient patient throughput.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and operational initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, infection prevention standards, military healthcare regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Perform duties requiring prolonged standing, walking, lifting, bending, and assisting patients throughout the workday.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP, ABHES, or completion of an equivalent United States Armed Forces medical training program.
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification through AAMA, AMT, or another nationally recognized credentialing organization.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recent Medical Assistant experience within the past two years.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Ability to successfully obtain and maintain a government background investigation/security clearance.

Preferred

  • Experience in Primary Care, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Surgery, ENT, Plastic Surgery, or Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Experience using electronic health record (EHR/EMR) systems, including MHS GENESIS.
  • Strong clinical, organizational, communication, and patient care skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented outpatient healthcare environment.
